The Top 10 Items for Every First Aid Kit
Every household should have a first aid kit and you may like to carry one in your car also. When you go to the beach, the countryside or head off for a few days camping you should always take a first aid kit. But what should every first aid kit contain? Here are a few essentials that should be in every first aid kit:
1. Antiseptic or antibiotic (either liquid, cream or both) such as Germolene or TCP. This is essential for stopping infections in cuts and grazes. Many modern antiseptics contain soothing pain relief which is ideal for young children.
2. Sticking plasters. What you will need for small cuts and grazes. If you have young children you might like to use some fun sticking plasters with images printed on them.
3. Sterile gauze dressings. What you will need when cleaning wounds and applying antiseptic.
4. Bandages in a number of shapes and sizes along with some safety pins. Its not necessary to pack every possible shape and size of bandage. If you consider that most common injuries occur to the hands, fingers, wrists and knees this should tell you what sizes of bandages you need in your kit.
5. Scissors. Necessary for cutting bandages and gauze. Also necessary for cutting clothing to get at a nasty injury.
6. Tweezers. Splinters are a very common injury. You’ll need those tweezers to remove splinters.
7. Pain Killers. Commonly called analgesics. Be certain that your first aid kit contains some pain killers and that the pain killers you choose are suitable for your family.
8. Insect bite and sting relief. (Antihistamine cream). Some antihistamine cream or ointment is essential if you are travelling but it’s also good to have some in your home first aid kit.
9. Eye bath and eye wash. What you need to flush foreign objects from someones eye.
10. Hot and cold packs. These are great for relieving joint pain and for reducing swelling.
While I’ve tried to boil things down to the essentials you may also like to consider adding some sterile latex gloves, some adhesive tape, some smelling salts along with important telephone numbers.
If you are packing a first aid kit for outdoor use, maybe while camping or hiking, you may like to consider including a flashlight along with a reflective survival blanket.
I hope that these suggestions will help you to pack a useful first aid kit that you know you can rely upon when you need it.
You should also give some thought to attending first aid course in order to be sure that you know what to do in the even of an emergency.
