It is fair for Wales to claim to be the home of the most romantic castles in the UK, including Caernarvon and Conway topping the list.

Scenic Rail Journeys
Perhaps the best way of seeing the impressive countryside is to take a trip on a vintage railway. Romantic and relaxing, Wales offers some of the most alluring scenery and a number of glamorous steam train branch lines such as the famous Ffestiniog Mountain railway. If you are likely to be travelling to Cardiff, you have to go to Merthyr Tydfil and take a trip on the Brecon Railway.

Beaches
The surrounding coastline to Cardiff has many lovely sandy beaches, and can become popular when the weather is hot. Llantwit Major, Penarth and fun loving Barry are pretty seaside resorts. All have great beach facilities and clean and safe swimming areas. They all also of quiet escapes from some of the large city areas, with little coves and bay waiting to be discovered.

Cardiff Nightlife
Cardiff is famed as a leading UK night spot, attracting party goers and youth groups, looking for a good night out. The best place to head for is St Mary’s street, which has in the region of 50 pubs and restaurants all in one street. Another happening place to go is Mermaid Quay, which is where you can find the bohemian waterfront cafe bars, late night clubs and life music.

Millennium Centre
The Millennium Centre is the much heralded showpiece of Welsh artistic pride and Cardiff’s new found prosperity and regeneration. It is home to the Welsh National Opera, and a further 6 other artistic companies who are performers. It is sleek and modern in design and features a wide variety of cultural and populist entertainment. It also features permanent exhibition and events for children to be involved.

As a dyed-in-the-wool English person, I have to confess a passion for the Welsh and for my trips to Wales. I love the scenic routes when travelling up to the north to meet friends who live in Angelsey. The people are passionate and on the whole friendly towards me – an outsider, providing some of the finest cuisines available in the UK. As a result of reading a blog post on a big online takeaway company, I was quite shocked.

It seems difficult to fathom, but it appears that the Welsh are the greatest consumers of takeaway food in the entire UK. If what you want is to spend your holidays in Wales, you could do the same as a large percentage of the population already does – order a takeaway meal. Obviously this could be difficult if you have chosen to stay in one of the may holiday cottages in Wales, and decide to spend you time in a place that is far from civilisation.

According to Just-Eat the super online takeaway specialists, there has been a huge growth in sales to people living in Wales. It is particularly in the big cities like Cardiff, where we have seen many surfers ordering takeaways online.

David Buttress, MD who was born in Cardiff said, “It is good to see my fellow countrymen embracing the online ordering process and enjoying the unusual things to do in Wales. The growth in sales in South Wales and particularly Cardiff is satisfying to see, especially as I am from the area.”

One of the takeaways, City Pizza on City Road Cardiff is experiencing the growth. Mr Kakay, boss of City Pizza said, “The orders that have come online from Just Eat have been amazing. I became a member in 2006, but it is only recently that the business has really started to move. I am pleased that I joined the Internet online service. My customers find it an easy service to use, and this then is easy for me.”

It is now time to consider some of the marvelous castles that are waiting for you to discover. Below are described some of the castles you might not first think about when choosing holidays in Wales.

Powis Castle
This castle was built way back in the 12th century as a means to keep English invaders out and the design castle itself followed all of the normal Norman architecture rules and guidelines. It contained an inner bailey, defensive outer wall and a very strong keep. In 1196 the castle fell to the English and in the 13th century the castle went through a very slow refurbishment programme. All that can be seen of these improvements is the long gallery.

Moving on to 1667 William who was made an Earl by the King began to transform the castle into a palace. State apartment, blue drawing room, library and state bedroom were added by William and when William fled the country his family did not return to it until 1703 in which his son set about making major improvements to the place and this is what makes the history of this place so wonderful and a reason to go on one of those family days out here.

Harlech Castle
This castle is one of the four that was built in wales for king Edward I. It can be found on the top of a rocky outcrop and this location provided the castle with some really nice natural defences with the only weaknesses being from the east and south. The way in which this problem was solved is brilliant with a massive ditch being built to keep all kinds of attackers out and at bay.

This castle almost looks as good as it did back in the day and it is set against the wonderful Snowdonia national park.

So there it is, there are still other castles to be explored but there are just a few of them written down for you to think about. Family holidays UK are made very nice in Wales and even if you do not fancy a week or so in the area you could always go on one of those family days out to the area.

If you wish to spend some time enjoying the historical splendours of this country, there are a number of short breaks in Wales that you can consider. If you have less time than a week, you may like to consider weekend breaks in Wales as an alternative, but equally fulfilling experience.

Whether you are on a short trip, weekend or slightly longer, it is important to make the best possible use of your time. Day trips or half-day trips are the key to getting a lot into a mini-break in Wales, and luckily there are plenty of activities that fit the bill.

I have listed below a selection of activities that awaits a visitor on any short breaks in Wales, or weekend breaks in Wales.

Country sports parks exist where you can easily spend an hour or two in an activity such as archery or clay pigeon shooting, or you could take some time to try quad biking and go-karting if you like the idea of being on the move.

Any expeditions that you choose for cycling, walking or climbing in Wales, can be tailored to suit whatever timescale you wish. Plenty of trails exist for hikers and ramblers. You may want to consider a short walk for a couple of miles, using less than a half day, or go camping for the full weekend taking in the great outdoors.

If you are into cllimbing, you can enrol on a full or half-day course which could also be conducted inside if the weather is not suitable. You could easily spend a day in Snowdonia or at the Gower Peninsula.

Fishing is another popular option and with a wealth of fisheries scattered throughout the country, you will never have to use up too much time getting to one.

Use half-days and evenings to enjoy the culture of the country, perhaps by visiting a museum, art gallery or craft centre, or catching a performance at the Wales Millennium Centre.

If you are not spending long in the country, you may prefer to stay in one of the delightful holiday cottages in Wales or a B&B. Wales has plenty of high-quality hotels if you don’t fancy catering for yourself or your family, and cosy, family-run B&Bs to give you a taste of home away from home.

When thinking a luxury holiday, Wales may not be the first name that springs to mind, but dismiss it and you risk missing a fabulous holiday destination.

There are a number of things that the country is well known for including: singing, the Valleys, sheep and to the younger audience – Torchwood and Doctor Who. Yet there is much more to Wales than this. Holidays can comprise of long stay or short breaks in Wales that can place you in a friendly guest house or B&B.

Without question one of the best things about holidays in Wales are the stunning views in the countryside. Despite its size, Wales has almost everything. In the north you can find the mountains of Snowdonia, the wilderness of the Brecon Beacons lie to the east, and to the south is the beauty of the Gower peninsula and Cardiff. The coast has plenty of sandy beaches, with the west of the country replendant in lush green countryside.

The masses are drawn to the country because it has so many things to enjoy visiting and to see. You will find something of interest whether travelling with a family or a just a quiet break with a partner. Perhaps the biggest holiday draw for 2010 in Wales is the Ryder Cup. Wales will be holding one of the world’s best sporting events next year as the US team try to retain the Ryder cup after years of domination by the European team. if you don’t like golf then don’t worry, as there is plenty to keep interested such as test cricket, film, music festivals and international rugby.

If you do decide that your next holiday will be in Wales, you will not have a problem sourcing acceptable accommodation. If you so wish you don’t have to anywhere near a tent or caravan as Wales has a number of luxury accommodation, and you certainly can’t beat the experience of holiday cottages in Wales.

It you are thinking of going on holiday in Wales, there are plenty of cottages on offer that are not only easily affordable but also easily accessible. Wales offers a fantastic number of holiday cottages, quality bed and breakfast and self catering units.

Some of the best holidays in Wales are available if you rent a self contained cottage or bed and breakfast. You can choose to go on one of the weekend breaks in Wales or simply look for a nice bed and breakfast. The following represent three that come highly recommended for value and location:

1. Cefn Coch farm holiday cottage

Holiday cottages in Wales couldn’t be set in a more stunning location than on a hillside just a few miles away from Machynlleth. If you are looking for a peaceful, serene and a private location then this cottage would certainly suit you. The cottage offers 4 king size bedrooms and also allows plenty of space for various activities. The cottage is also located nearby the Museum of Modern Art.

2. Ty Cerbyd cottage

The cottage is surrounded by gorgeous Welsh Countryside and was formerly the coach house of the estate. The cottage comes with all the original features like old beams. There is also a riverside patio area with access to the nearby river. The cottage also boasts a well equipped kitchen, lounge, twin and double bedrooms and a bathroom.

3. Mor A Mynydd cottage

The cottage can accommodate up to 8 people. Pets are allowed in this cottage, which will suit some people. The cottage is very comfortable and close to a picturesque sandy beach with lots of activities. A district golf club is just a few minutes away from the cottage and some of the other attractive activities are also just a few minutes of drive away. Taking day trips or half day trips are the key to obtaining the best for a short break in Wales, and fortunately there are lots of suitable activities on offer.

I have listed below a selection of activities that awaits a visitor on any short breaks in Wales, or weekend breaks in Wales.

You can find country sports parks where you can spend and hour or two doing archery or clay pigeon shooting, or you could have a go at quad biking or go-karting if moving fast is appealing.

If you want to go cycling, walking or climbing around Wales, you can make the expeditions as long or as short as you like. Plenty of trails exist for hikers and ramblers. You may wish to take a short walk for several miles, requiring less than a day, or go camping for the full weekend and feel the great outdoors.

There are half day indoor courses availble for climbers, which are designed to save you precious time. With at least a day that can be enjoyed in the Gower Peninsula or Snowdonia.

Fishing is another popular option and with a wealth of fisheries scattered throughout the country, you will never have to use up too much time getting to one.

Use perhaps half a day or an evening to sample the country’s culture, by a visit to a museum or art gallery or perhaps visit the Wales Millenium Museum to take in a show.

Wales offers a fantastic number of holiday cottages, quality bed and breakfast and self catering units.

Some of the best holidays in Wales are available if you rent a self contained cottage or bed and breakfast. You can choose to go on one of the short breaks in Wales or one of the readily available weekend breaks in Wales. The following represent three that come highly recommended for value and location:

Holiday cottages in Wales couldn’t be set in a more stunning location than on a hillside just a few miles away from Machynlleth. If you are searching for peace and quiet and a serene location, this might be the right cottage for you needs. The cottage offers 4 king size bedrooms and also allows plenty of space for various activities. The Museum of Modern art is quite close and easily accessible.

The cottage is surrounded by gorgeous Welsh Countryside and was formerly the coach house of the estate. All of the old beams are still to be seen within the cottage. There is also a riverside patio area with access to the nearby river. The cottage also boasts a well equipped kitchen, lounge, twin and double bedrooms and a bathroom.
